Game Boy Rare Unreleased Peripheral Finally Unveiled

December 28, 2021 by Dennis Patrick

A look at what could have been.

Nintendo is known for delivering some thrilling hardware platforms over the years. It’s become a major key player for the video game industry and paved the way for newcomers to join in. However, not everything that went into research and development made its way out. We have recently found a rare canceled peripheral that almost launched for the Nintendo Game Boy. This peripheral would have brought quite a few features to the system ahead of its time.

The Nintendo Game Boy was a popular system, and it spawned several iterations over the years. However, we’ve seen a few peripherals released with the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. One of those projects that almost launched but was eventually scrapped was the Page Boy. Did You Know Gaming recently unearthed this peripheral on their YouTube channel which provided a short documentary.

Essentially, this was a peripheral that would have brought out quite a few features to the system. Through radio waves, the device would have brought in a search engine, instant messaging, and even connected with different peripherals. For instance, players who owned the device could send a selfie using the Game Boy Camera peripheral through the Page Boy. However, that wasn’t all.

There was a TV feature equipped with this device. Essentially, Nintendo would broadcast their own shows like game announcements through the device. Think of it as an early rendition of the Nintendo Direct but displayed right onto your Nintendo Game Boy device. It was an interesting idea, but ultimately it didn’t take off. Instead, after a few years of consideration, Nintendo decided to pass on the product. However, they did make use of some of these features in later platforms. Again, the Nintendo Direct is a good example of that.
