Destiny’s First Trials of Osiris is Ongoing

May 25, 2015 by Vanessa Lopa

Destiny’s House of Wolves expansion has dropped, and the first round of Trials of Osiris started this weekend. Are you ready?

Trials of Osiris is Destiny’s new weekend event, and Elimination Mode is new to the game. You need to pay your way into the Trials of Osiris by purchasing a Trials Passage. This is your ticket AND score card, and they cost 100 Glimmer each. You’re allowed 3 losses per Passage, but try to get as many wins as you can, since your number of wins dictates what you can purchase from the vendor. The event itself will run for five days, from Friday until reset on Tuesday, so you’ve got plenty of time to keep trying. It's ongoing, so you have only two days left if you haven't yet participated in it.

There’s no matchmaking here, so you’ll really need to pull to friends to join your party. Trials of Osiris will require a good bit of teamwork, which is fun but stressful. At the beginning you’ll be figuring out the map, but Bungie won’t be rotating maps to give players the chance to really get to know the area so they can strategize more effectively.

Your number of wins determines what you’ll be able to purchase from the vendor. Two to three wins will get you a blue package that contains Motes of Light, Passage Coins, and other items. Five wins gains you the ability to purchase the weekly armor. Six wins will get you a Legendary package. Seven wins will give you the ability to purchase the weekly weapon. Eight wins will let you buy a Legendary package. The exact contents of the packages have not been disclosed, but Bungie has said that they will not include Exotics or Trials of Osiris armor. Fair enough.

The way it looks, the best teams are going to win. Is this a cop-out on the developer’s part, or is this part of the game design? Some people struggle with the barriers to entry as they are, but Bungie’s trying to open those up. One problem that Trials of Osiris addresses is the difficulty of getting additional party members. Raids require 5 other teammates, but in Trials, you can manage with a smaller group. This is a big deal for people who have difficulty with working around each other’s schedules, or haven’t found that many people that they can work with.

Another thing that Bungie has added are the consumables that will help make wins a little easier. This is aimed towards helping the less hardcore PvP players. Brother Vance is the NPC for Trials of Osiris, and players will want to go to him to buy Mercy of Osiris, which “forgives” your first loss, and Boon of Osiris, which counts your first victory as two. These can be purchased using Passage Coins, which you can earn in the Crucible.
