On March 17, 2015 Zenimax Online removed the subscription fee that had been required to play The Elder Scrolls Online since its release in 2014. The game was rebranded as The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, the Crown Store was instated, and a release date of June 9, 2015 was set for the long-delayed Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions.

The Crown Store has been used by Zenimax Online to sell miscellaneous in-game items to players in the form of cosmetic costumes, mounts, and more, including an optional monthly subscription to the game, known as ESO Plus, which grants free access to current and future DLC (so long as the subscription is active) and a monthly allotment of 1,500 Crowns, the currency used in the game’s Crown Store.
