Star Wars Battlefront: DICE Outlines E3 Plans, Philosophy Behind the Game

May 14, 2015 by Stephen Daly

Developer promises ‘authentic, immersive experience’ for players.

DICE has issued an update on Star Wars Battlefront on the game's official website with details of their E3 plans and the philosophy behind the shooter's development.

Niklas Fegraeus, Design Director on the game, said fans should tune in on June 15th to see footage of the game during EA's E3 media briefing and while the game is still in development, "your questions will be answered in the coming months as we prepare for launch starting November 17."

Fegraeus went on to discuss how seriously DICE is taking the creation of the game, "We want Star Wars Battlefront to be not only authentic but respectful to this universe we all hold so dear. Hopefully, you’ve seen the length we go to in order to achieve this, ranging from scanning actual film props to including original sounds. Simply put, we want every fan of Star Wars to feel like this game celebrates this amazing galaxy far, far away and captures that special magic we’ve all fallen in love with."

He discussed the ways in which the developer has looked at "many new technologies" which have led to enhanced video game fidelity with "physically based rendering as well as photogrammetry workflows."

While these are not "easy things to do", Fegraeus says they have created "an authentic, immersive experience."

Explaining why DICE decided to reboot the franchise rather than develop a sequel, he commented, "The reason is quite simple: we want to pay homage to this beloved franchise, while making our own stamp for a new generation. The way we want to do this is by taking inspiration from the old games’ foundations, like the use of both 1st and 3rd person views and the ability to play as heroes. We want to then create a new direction where we add features and capabilities you've never seen before."

Pointing to the game's new modes and maps, Fegraeus added "All our Missions can be played either alone or cooperatively, making them perfect for some quick Star Wars action when you have a friend over."

Star Wars Battlefront launches on November 19th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
