Star Trek Online to go Free To Play By The End of the Year. Surprise!

September 1, 2011 by Josh Wanamaker

Chief Financial Officer Kelvin Lau revealed that Star Trek Online will be switching over to a free-to-play business model by the end of the year.

Perfect World, the Chinese gaming conglomerate which now owns American MMO developer Crytpic Studios, released a quarterly earnings report this week. In it,  Chief Financial Officer Kelvin Lau revealed that Star Trek Online will be switching over to a free-to-play business model by the end of the year.

This should be surprising to no-one, as it seems just about every MMO out there that isn't owned by a major American developer/publisher is switching over to/being built around a free-to-play model. Seeing as how I find paying subscription fees to be generally unpleasant, I have absolutely no problem with this!

Thanks, RPS!
