Dying Light 2: Stay Human Developers Offers More Complex Geometry For Parkour Combat

November 17, 2021 by Dennis Patrick

Easy to grasp but difficult to master.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human is quite the anticipated video game. Techland has been working on this project for years, and we’re gearing up for its release. While we might not get the game this year, the studio has scheduled it for early 2022. Now, new details are constantly coming out to further hype up and market the title. One of the latest bits of information comes from an interview with lead designer Tymon Smektala.

Recently, Gamerant had the chance to speak with Techland’s lead designer Tymon Smektala. During their conversation, the question of parkour came up. Now, if you played the first game, Dying Light, then you know a massive part of the gameplay is centered around parkour. You’re able to freerun around the map, vault over objects, and it makes for some thrilling and tense gameplay moments. After all, the main enemy here is the infected undead. Unlike some other zombie-based games, these creatures can move quite fast at times. So Tymon Smektala has expressed that the developers wanted the game world to feel more like a playground.

In this upcoming sequel, players will constantly move around and be aware of their surroundings. It’s a first-person shooter, but with parkour elements, you can create some makeshift moves. Whether it’s simply to flee an area or create some distance, players can expect the parkour to be improved from the first installment. The lead designer stated that the game was tweaked a bit to allow the parkour element to be more inviting. Newcomers shouldn’t have a significant obstacle to conquer when it comes to an understanding the controls.

“But when you start moving through the game, when you start progressing your story, the geometry becomes more and more complex so now you have to pay more attention to what you’re doing. And, also, there’s a difference between a player who just plays the game and a player who tries to master the game. We have a lot of parkour challenges in the game, like basically trials or time trials, that test your skills, and you can really see the difference then. Every player can complete the trial and get the bronze. But to get the gold you really have to understand what you’re doing, when you’re doing it. You really have to start reading the geometry like a real parkour guy would do in the real world, and using that to your advantage and using the correct skills on the correct elements of geometry.”

With that said, the developer noted that you could master the parkour element. There are said to be plenty of challenges within the game that will test your skills. It’s all about studying the map geometry and using some complex moves to quickly traverse. If you study the world, you seemingly could unlock quite a bit of gameplay potential.

Currently, Dying Light 2: Stay Human is scheduled to release on February 4, 2022. However, when the game does make its way out, you can pick up a copy for the PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and even the Nintendo Switch platform.
