Star Wars: Battlefront Won’t Have Squads or Classes

May 11, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Squads and classes are being replaced with a freeform system in Battlefront.

Star Wars: Battlefront differs greatly from DICE's Battlefield series of games in numerous ways, and one of the ways it's different from its modern warfare-based predecessors is the lack of squads or classes.

Speaking in an interview with the Official Xbox Magazine, the game's design director Niklas Fegraeus says players will be able to freely pick whatever equipment they like. Unlike the Battlefield games, players won't be constrained to a pool of class-specific options and will instead be able to play the game according to their personal preferences.

According to Fegraeus, the new equipment that players unlock will be gated by experience points, but that players will also be able to share the equipment they have unlocked with their playing Partner. That's Partner with a capital P–it's a game mechanic. As such, two players will be able to go their separate paths and unlock their own things while contributing to a two-player dynamic.

Instead of teaming up with groups of four to five players, players will now be able to team up with a single other player and reap the benefits of their engagement. Players will be able to spawn on their Partner and track them via the heads-up display.

Star Wars: Battlefront will be out on November 17 for the PC, Xbox One and PS4. Expect to see more details about the game at E3 2015.
