Nintendo Switch Online YouTube Video Is Nintendo’s Most Disliked Ever

November 1, 2021 by Matt Cook

There’s a lot of hate for Nintendo Switch Online right now.

Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack reveal trailer is now the most disliked video the company has ever had on its YouTube channel. The trailer overtook Nintendo’s Metroid Prime: Federation Force trailer from E3 2015, which currently has 97,000 dislikes. Nintendo’s Expansion Pack trailer currently has 127,000 dislikes at the time of writing.

The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack trailer has been able to beat Metroid Prime: Federation Force’s unwanted record in just over two weeks despite the Metroid trailer being on YouTube for six years.

Nintendo’s Expansion Pack has been widely panned by fans. Nintendo has struggled to justify the cost of Nintendo Switch Online since it was launched three years ago. When it was rumored that N64 games would be coming to NSO, many assumed that it would be adding value to the service. Instead, Nintendo has opted to charge an extra $30 for the individual Expansion Pack subscription. It is 150% more than the cost of Nintendo’s basic online membership, which is $19.99.

It didn’t help that when the Expansion Pack launched, many of the games included in the subscription were glitchy and lacked basic features. Nintendo also launched the service with just a handful of games to start with. Although data mining has revealed that many more are on the way, the service might not be getting this reaction if more were included from the get-go.

As of September 2020, Nintendo Switch Online has over 26 million subscribers despite the lack of features compared to PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live. One thing that the service has going for it is the cheap $19.99 per year price compared to Sony and Microsoft’s offerings, something that the Expansion Pass definitely cannot claim. It’s unclear at this stage if Nintendo will release data for the number of Expansion Pass subscribers, but it will be interesting to see how the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscription fares after the frosty reception it has received.
