Star Wars Battlefront Dev Details the Creation of Sullust, the Lava Planet

May 4, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Here’s how DICE came up with Sullust in Star Wars Battlefront.

Star Wars Battlefront developer DICE has put together a new feature on the game's official website going into no small amount of detail about how they created the planet Sullust, one of the game's premier battlegrounds, for the game.

According to the developers, they based it off of Icelandic geography, and they went there in person to get a feel of how the icy, yet volcanically active planet would play.

Like other planets in the Star Wars universe, including the icy planet of Hoth and the desert planet of Tatooine, the entirety of planet Sullust has a single, static geographical feature. It goes without saying that George Lucas was never big on creating realistic planets, but it certainly helps game developers like DICE and EA to create themed battlegrounds based on planets in the Star Wars universe.

“We wanted to create a planet on our own, first trying out different ideas and then deciding on a lava planet,” said Anton Grandert, Concept Artist at DICE. “With black sharp rocks, huge land shifts, red lava, turquoise lakes, and white smoke…everything to make it really colorful yet imposing and threatening.”

Further details about the development of the planet can be found on the official site. The studio released two screenshots (seen above and below) of planet Sullust. It looks pretty cool.

Star Wars Battlefront is out on November 17 for the PC, Xbox One and PS4.
