Sony has sold 22.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles since the console launched in November 2013, the company announced today.
That means 44,600 have been sold on average per day since launch, or roughly one every two seconds. 14.8 million PS4s were sold over the 12 months to the financial year ending March 31, 2015 and Sony expects to sell 16 million more by March 31st, 2016.
However, handheld sales continue to tumble with combined sales of the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita falling from 4.1 million to 3.3 million over the period – Sony did not break down sales of the individual platforms.
"This significant improvement was primarily due to the impact of the above-mentioned increase in (PS4) sales," Sony's report noted. "(This was) partially offset by the impact of the decrease in PS3 software sales, the unfavourable impact of the appreciation of the US dollar reflecting the high ratio of US dollar-denominated costs, as well as the recording of an 11.2bn ($93m) write-down of PS Vita and PS TV components in the current fiscal year."
Sony Computer Entertainment is now the company's revenue source, up by a third year-on-year to $11.5 billion.
Sony had sold 20.2 million PS4s by March 1st, meaning an additional 2.1 million systems were purchased during March. The sizeable increase for the month can likely be attributed to key exclusives The Order 1886 and Bloodborne.
