Nintendo Switch Online Datamining Reveals Upcoming N64 and Sega Genesis Games

October 27, 2021 by Matt Cook

Which games do you want to see on Nintendo Switch Online?

The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack service launched this week. After some initial teething issues that will hopefully be ironed out soon, the Expansion Pack has been hit or miss with gamers. Many have complained that the Expansion Pack does not justify the extra cost over the regular Nintendo Switch Online service. However, that could change as the service progresses.

Datamining of the Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis apps has revealed more games that could be coming to the Expansion Pack. The N64 app lists a total of 38 games in alphabetical order. Currently, there are only nine N64 games on the service. Although the games are not named, it’s possible to decipher some of the games by the order of the list. For example, there’s a spot that, alphabetically, fits Majora’s Mask. Other games that fit the alphabetical order are Smash Bros, Wave Race, and Mario Party.

Datamining of the Sega Genesis app proved to be similarly fruitful. Despite only 14 games being available right now, there are spots for a total of 52. Due to the number of Genesis games planned, it isn’t as easy to deduce the specific games based on alphabetical order.

We don’t have any idea when these games could be coming to the N64 and Genesis apps but it’s likely that Nintendo will drip feed them slowly over time. If the issues with the games released so far are anything to go by, Nintendo may want to ensure that future games are more polished before releasing them.

Another interesting tidbit from the data mining is the numbering of the consoles for Nintendo Switch Online. NES games start with the number 1, SNES games start with number 2, N64 are number 3 and Genesis are number 5. The missing number 4 console is likely the Game Boy. Rumors have been circulating that Game Boy games are coming to Nintendo Switch Online and it seems like Nintendo has already set the number aside for them.
