Star Wars Battlefront 3: AT-STs Controllable, AT-ATs Not Controllable, No Galactic Conquest

April 21, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

DICE seems set to focus on making their Battlefront a Star Wars themed Battlefield game, rather than reexplore all the ideas and tropes from the first games.

We have some new interesting details about Star Wars Battlefront 3, this time in regards to vehicles and Galactic Conquest mode.

We have seen two walkers in the game, the chicken legs AT-ST, and the massive AT-ATs. The AT-STs will be fully controllable, but the AT-ATs are not.

This is partly informed, of course, by what the vehicles are in the Star Wars games. While the AT-ATs are the more iconic vehicles, out in the field they’re giant lumbering hulks that require many people to move, and their only strategy is to overwhelm with massivity. On the other hand, AT-STs actually look fun to control, especially considering they are a few steps removed from, say, a mech inMechwarrior.

This is also partly due to game design. The AT-ATs are setpieces for a Rush gametype. Under this gametype, the Rebellion would want to take an MCOM to summon a Y-Wing bombing run to take it out.

Given that this is all early, this information may be set to change as DICE may only be referring to the game maps and modes they have revealed thus far. Still, if you take a minute to think about how the AT-ATs function in the lore, if DICE gave you the option to pilot or operate them they would need to come up with an interesting hook.

Another noteworthy omission is Galactic Conquest, a popular mode from the first two Star Wars Battlefront games. In spite of that fact, this shouldn’t be much of a surprise either. The mode has you conquering each galaxy planet by planet, and DICE has already ruled out space battles.

DICE seems set to focus on making their Battlefront a Star Wars themed Battlefield game, rather than reexplore all the ideas and tropes from the first games. This may ultimately go over newer fans better than older ones, but how will it ultimately affect the game?
