Star Wars Battlefront 3 Dev Diary Reveals DICE Used Photogrammetry For Uncanny Accuracy

April 21, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

It also y gives us a few seconds of Boba Fett, flying and using his pistol.

DICE has shared their first developer diary for Star Wars Battlefront 3.

For DICE, the key focus has been making digital replicas of the Star Wars universe. Design director Niklas Fegraeus explained that the studio’s research was extensive, but they also used the latest state-of-the-art tools.

We already know DICE went to the Skywalker Ranch to check out valuable models and props, rerecorded and used archived audio from their archives, and even went out to the actual locations the original films were shot in, in different places around the world.

Now, this dev diary reveals that DICE used photogrammetry to make as accurate recreations of Star Wars’ world as possible. What is photogrammetry? It is the science of making measurements from photographs. DICE must have felt the need to use this technique in situations where they were recreating hypothetical objects, or objects or things that are no longer available, for one reason or another.

Interestingly enough, Niklas shared a description for the DLC film tie-in The Battle of Jakku. These were Niklas’ exact words describing the DLC:

…the pivotal moment when the New Republic confronted key Imperial holdouts on the remote desert planet on the Outer Rim.

It does seem possible that the events in The Battle of Jakku themselves set up the beginning of Star Wars The Force Awakens.

Lastly, as you can see in our preview pic, the dev diary gives us a few seconds of Boba Fett, flying and using his pistol.

Star Wars Battlefront 3 will be released on November 17 on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
