Following Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, the company essentially decided the entire Star Wars Extended Universe was no longer canon.
So what does that mean for BioWare's Old Republic games? The Extended Universe is now considered "Legacy" content and eventually some of the stories and characters could be introduced as official lore in future Star Wars stories.
Lucasfilm creative executive Pablo Hidalgo discussed the matter during last week's Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim, California, as reported by Kotaku.
Hidalgo said BioWare has "created their own universe that is so fantastic," and added that they're not going to change anything about the Old Republic games.
Asked if future films or books might touch on the Old Republic period, Lucasfilm's Leland Chee commented that "it's definitely not off the table".
EA recently shut down most of its free-to-play portfolio but The Old Republic escaped Order 66, with EA's Patrick Soderlund noting, "For instance, Star Wars: The Old Republic is a game that continues to have a very enthusiastic and growing player community. We have plans to introduce more new story-driven game updates to our Star Wars: The Old Republic players this year."
While it may not happen anytime soon, Obsidian continues to express interest in developing Knights of the Old Republic 3.
