This Is How GTA 5 Looks Like Played From An Oculus Rift

April 16, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

The immersive effect breaks up when control issues come up, but it’s fun when it lasts.

Ever wondered what it would be like to play Grand Theft Auto 5 using VR headsets? Have we got the video for you.

Youtuber Hoopsternation and his friend put on some Oculus Rift headsets and demonstrated Grand Theft Auto Online using the headsets. Note that they’re both playing with the headsets, but we’re mainly looking at Hoopsternation’s video. For copyright reasons, the game’s original audio has also been turned off.

The two demonstrate walking on the street, driving a car, shooting a pedestrian, running from the police, stunt jumping a vehicle, flying a chopper, and parachute jumping.

They note that the video may be a little too much for the average Oculus Rift user. It can definitely be disorienting, even as VR’s immersive effects come into play.

Of course, the Rift’s performance specs max out at 720p for each side, 60 FPS. Even if its not 4k, or even 1080p, the game looks great output from VR. The upcoming Vive and other future headsets may impress with even better performance specs.

Overall, it’s a mixed experience, because of the difficulty controlling your characters without built in VR support. The immersive effect breaks up when control issues come up, but it’s fun when it lasts. If you do have a headset, it’s a mode to mess around with, but not necessarily play the game through.
