Grand Theft Auto 5 PC: Best Framerate Settings Guide

April 15, 2015 by Stephen Daly

Settings may vary across different set-ups but these are smart steps in general.

You may have heard that a niche indie title called Grand Theft Auto 5 was released last night more than a year after the game's original last-gen console – just proving Rockstar weren't really serious about the whole thing but given that their a small untested developer it's not too surprising.

Even so, if were able to find this obscure game someone on its latest platform, you'll likely want to make sure it looks its best.

Redditor RUFiO006 has put together the below guide for getting the best framerate possible with the game. He's on a 3570k with 4GB 970 and settings may need to be tweaked depending on which rig you're using.

  • Grass Quality is a killer. On Ultra it halves my frame rate in rural areas. Set this to Very High.
  • Extended Distance Scaling and Extended Shadows Distance (in Advanced Graphics) both give my GPU a beating. I just set these to minimum.
  • High Resolution Shadows (also in Advanced Graphics) has a high performance cost with little visual payout, in my opinion.
  • MSAA is costly even at 2X. You will get frame drops. I'm sure you could dial down some of the other settings to minimise the impact. FXAA works okay on its own as an alternative.
  • If you drop Shadow Quality down to High, you should then have enough overhead to enable 2x MSAA (with TXAA if you have Nvidia). This is great if you prefer fewer jagged edges over sharper shadows.

All other settings are maxed out and RUFiO006 reports that otherwise they're enjoying a smooth 60fps at 1080p. With that said, you can find the game's minimum and recommended graphics settings here.
