The Division’s Complex Story Framework Is Like A Big Puzzle

April 11, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

The developers are investing time in ensuring the persistent online world is also narratively consistent.

We have some new details onTom Clancy’s The Division, thanks to some recent interviews.

Lead narrative designer John Björling spoke candidly about his job, and what he could say about this game. As a go-between the programmers and writers, Bjorling makes his contributions on both ends of the spectrum, as well as somewhere in between.

He describes a complex framework which is a challenge to bring together. In fact, the game’s story is a big puzzle, with many elements that cross between disciplines and depend on each other. It seems Bjorling had to pay a lot more attention to making sure The Division’s persistent was also consistent and not filled with contradictions, as he spent more time considering bucket colors than actual story points.

Bjorling was also asked about conventional interactive game narratives. While citing Bioshock and Spec Ops The Line as games that experimented with the push – pull of interactivity and game in interesting ways, but the narrative experiences they’re creating with The Division are a different animal altogether. Bjorling thinks we’ll see more games structured like this in the future.
