Asus Announces World First 144Hz IPS FreeSync Monitor

April 9, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Asus has announced a new high performance monitor for gamers.

PC gaming performance hardware manufacturer Asus is upping their game with the announcement that their very first FreeSync monitor will sport an IPS panel with a resolution of up to 2560×1440, or "WQHD" at 144Hz. The monitor's codenamed MG279Q, and is designed specifically for PC gamers with high performance rigs capable of supporting ultra high resolutions and framerates.

Other IPS panels only go as high as 75Hz, but this one does double that at 144Hz, refresh rates typically reserved for TN panels.

When the monitor was first showcased in January, it was announced as a GSync panel capable of supporting Nvidia's GSync technology. Given the announcement that the new monitor will be running on AMD's Adaptive Sync FreeSync technology, AMD card owners intending to buy a new monitor should be delighted by the news.

AMD tweeted out the good news, welcoming the monitor to the FreeSync family of monitors.

We look forward to seeing how Asus' competitors react with their own offerings.
