Halo Online Modders Still Plan To Spread The Game Worldwide

April 6, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

The best thing Microsoft can do to stop this is. of course, announce an international release.

Halo Online will still be widely available worldwide DMCA aside, if a group of modders have their way.

Microsoft recently DMCA’d Github from helping distribute assets on the currently Russia-only game.

The modders, talking to Torrentfreak, revealed that they received the files, codenamed ElDorito, from a user on 4chan’s /v/ board. From there, modder Emoose did the brunt work of hacking the client so that you could load the files and play the game. Emoose has managed to hack Halo 2 and 3 before, so he had experience in this area. The modders also claim that they are distributing a clearly early build.

The modders now claim they have made redundant git backups on private and public git servers. They seem determined to keep going on and providing copies of the game available worldwide. Of course, the backups are to ensure that DMCA’s will not restrict them from doing so.

The modders, one of whom is apparently an actual game developer, see their actions as a service, and not damaging to the game at all. On the contrary, they are perplexed by Microsoft’s decision to make the game Russia-only and feel all Halo fans should get an opportunity to play the game. Based on this logic, the best thing Microsoft can do is agree to make an international release for Halo Online, and if not do so immediately, at least make an official announcement.
