Sword Coast Legends Looks a Lot Like Baldur’s Gate

March 23, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

The classic real-time-with-pause RPG is back.

PC role-playing games are making something of a resurgence, which began with the releases of the Kickstarter-backed Divinity: Original Sin and Wasteland 2 last year, and the upcoming Pillars of Eternity, which comes out this week.

The franchise that started it all, Dungeons & Dragons, isn't one to be left out in the cold and the developers at n-Space and Wizards of the Coast have since announced a new RPG called Sword Coast Legends, which–much like Pillars of Eternity–harkens back to the gameplay mechanics of the classics like Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate.

In a newly released video, Game Director Dan Tudge narrates the proceedings as a group of adventurers make their way through a maze of sewers into the city of Luskan, where they eventually find themselves going up against the undead.

What's interesting about Sword Coast Legends is the fact it comes with a real-time Dungeon Master mode, in which one DM can guide a group of four players through an adventure–just like the tabletop experience.

Personally, I'm cool with them just including a complete single player campaign. All that multiplayer stuff is just the icing on the cake.

The game's due out this year.
