The Witcher 3 Guides Players to Points of Interest

March 23, 2015 by Jacob Saylor

For optimal beauty.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will likely be one of the biggest, baddest releases of 2015. CD Projekt Red, who is developing the title, has voiced – on multiple occasions – that their game will boast of the best graphics gamers have seen. Obviously, they're referring mostly to the PC version, but it's a good bet that the Playstation 4 and Xbox One versions have some of the most impressive graphics on consoles yet.

In a recent interview with Miles Tost, a level designer at CD Projekt Red, an unusual importance on "points of interest" was discussed. These are areas that are highlighted by the environment, almost asking players to explore them.

Here's what Tost had to say:

"Early on there was a lot of making maps/sketches, preparing design documents for regions in our world. Then we went on and started implementing the first pass of POIs on the level. Then iterations follow. Playtests result in things working well / not so well."

"We'd play with shapes and composition to help guide the eye of the player to objects/places we want the player to see and explore or likewise, try to hide certain things that way."
