Final Fantasy 11 Closing on PS2 and Xbox 360 Next Year, PC Version to Live On

March 19, 2015 by Stephen Daly

Vana’diel Project to expand game in 14th year.

Final Fantasy 11 will come to an end on PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 next year, 14 years after launch, while the PC version will continue to operate.

Square Enix is also expanding with Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, the first chapter of which will be made available in May 2015. The three Vana'diel chapters are designed to bring together all the events of the last 13 years. The publisher states, "we aim for it serve as the ultimate compilation of all we have accomplished to date".

Key characters from the game's history will star in the episodes; the second of which will be launched in August while the final episode is scheduled for November.

"We plan for this to be a grand conclusion to the Final Fantasy series' first MMORPG," Square Enix said, "and indeed, the first console MMORPG, in a way that will be recorded in the annals of the genre's history."

On shutting down the PS2 and Xbox 360 servers the company commented, "We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have enjoyed Final Fantasy 11 on these platforms and to those who have assisted us in bringing Vana'diel to you."

Square Enix will however release "minor version updates" to rebalance gameplay and fix bugs on PC.

The Goddess's Gala, a new event, will begin "as a show of appreciation for those who have loved Vana'diel throughout the years".

"The Goddess's Gala is a series of various campaigns that have been held previously to great acclaim and can be enjoyed by both regular players and returnees alike."

Final Fantasy 11 is also coming to mobile next year in Japan, Korea, North America, and parts of Europe.
