The Division Dev Says Cinematics Kept To A Minimum

March 9, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Ubisoft Massive is convinced they have a winning system on their hands.

Ubisoft Massive’s head of communications Martin Hultbrg shared new details about upcoming online shooter Tom Clancy’s The Division.

Clancy’s name himself means Ubisoft has to take special attention to the game. Most Tom Clancy games revolve around preventing a threat or disaster. To change it up a bit, with The Division, the focus is on what would happen if the disaster already happened.

Martin also revealed that they have cut down any cinematics in the game to a minimum. Their line of thinking is that they wanted to not interrupt gameplay. The game itself would offer a lot of variety in its missions, and Massive is confident that they have come up with a winning system.

As a persistent online game, Tom Clancy’s The Division has different needs and requirements than other contemporary games, so cutscenes are actually not a highlight for the game. Following the criticism of cutscenes in The Order: 1886, however, reducing their reliance on them can only benefit Massive and its reputation.

Of course, other online games have not been immune from criticism. If Ubisoft wants to avoid the gaffes that hit Driveclub and Halo: The Master Chief Collection, they will certainly need to make sure everything is in tiptop shape.

Tom Clancy’s The Division will be released on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One this year.
