Valve May Have the Upper Hand in Virtual Reality Battle

March 5, 2015 by Jacob Saylor

Valve has solved the motion sickness problem.

News regarding the various virtual reality offerings of Sony, Valve and Facebook have all been surfacing over the past few days. One topic that has been particularly hot is the potential for these virtual reality systems to induce motion sickness in the user.

Oculus VR's John Carmack recently made the statement that motion sickness is a very real problem that needs to be addressed.

“People like the demo, they take it home, and they start throwing up.”

Shortly after this, Carmack changed his mind, saying that, ""It's a real issue. But it's maybe not as big of an issue as we were afraid of."

Carmack believes the future will be held together by virtual reality:

"I honestly do see a world with a billion people using virtual reality headsets."

Valve's Gabe Newell spoke about the issues that Carmack was referring to. Newell says that when players use Valve's own virtual reality hardware – SteamVR – that "“zero percent of people get motion sick."

This is a pretty clear argument from Valve that you should be looking at SteamVR rather than Sony's Project Morpheus or Facebook's Oculus Rift.

What do you think about Newell's statement? Let us know in the comments below.
