Final Fantasy 15: Environment Dev’t Crowdsourced To XPEC, New Footage Revealed

February 2, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

These include an extended version of the train scene and a video on the cat cam.

Square Enix has revealed that they have signed on XPEC to help finish Final Fantasy 15 in the recent Taipei Game Show. They also shared new early development footage of the game.

XPEC is a Taiwanese game developer that mostly does outsourcing work for bigger companies, including Activision’s Skylander games, as well as mobile games. They are comparable to companies like TOSE in Japan.

For the Taipei Game Show, Square showed some early development footage they worked on with XPEC, indicating that the developer was part of the game’s production from an early stage.

These include an extended version of the train scene originally seen in Jump Festa, and what they jokingly referred to as the cat cam, showing a cat running around the game world. XPEC is also involved in the game’s later stages of development, but of course, they can’t share that work with the public.

Square claimed that XPEC was only one of many developers they signed on to help build Noctis’ world. XPEC, and these other developers seem to have been brought on mainly to help build the massive environment the game will have. Arguably, this would be considered the brunt work of the game, as the core team works on the characters, combat, and other aspects.

However, this also hints at another thing, which is the scale of the world requiring that Square outsource development. This may or may not be a good thing, of course, as arguably, many newer games don’t justify having that giant environment to roam around in with sufficient content.

Final Fantasy 15 is in development for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
