Nintendo Announces New 3DS XL, Will Retail For $199.99 Next Month

January 14, 2015 by Holly Green

Nintendo announces yet another version of the handheld, bringing the total number of models to 5.

During today's announcement-heavy Nintendo Direct conference, a new model of the 3DS XL was confirmed for next month.

Called the New Nintendo 3DS XL, this version of the device will have a new C-stick near the upper right portion of the lower screen allowing for enhanced controls. It was also feature 3D face tracking that will anticipate the movement of the player's head to adjust the 3D effects for optimal viewing. Amiibo figurines, previously usable only with the Wii U, will also be compatible with the device's lower screen. A system update next month will allow Super Smash Bros. players to use their Amiibo with the 3DS version of the game.

Nintendo also promises improved Internet and downloading speeds and superior processing power over the 3DS, which you can see demonstrated in the announcement video above. The New Nintendo 3DS XL will debut on February 13, 2015 and retail for $199.99. It joins the numerous other models of the 3DS to bring the total number to 5.
