Transport Tycoon Remake Ends 2014 with a Bang (Update: Correction)

January 6, 2015 by Jacob Saylor

Open source remake brings the best of both new and old versions of the game.

Correction: Chris Sawyer is unaffiliated with OpenTTD, we regret the error in saying otherwise.

Chris Sawyer does not approve of game piracy (of which OpenTTD is accused of due to its nature) and is not associated with it in any way. The original Transport Tycoon has been updated for modern platforms in its 20th year in forms licenced and approved by its owner and creator. You can grab them here for the iOS and Android devices like the Kindle Fire.

Updated post follows:

The original Transport Tycoon was loved by a select few gamers. IN 1995, it was hard for many to appreciate the micro-management system that the game employed. Nowadays, a game like Transport Tycoon would have flourished. After a few years on the market, the game saw its end in 1998.

OpenTTD is an open source simulation based on Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon. It's the same in nearly every way, but bolsters the title's weaker facets. As 2014 came to a close, the team announced that a new version of the OpenTTD Transport Tycoon will be made available soon.

As the game's beta rolls closer, OpenTTD's developers write this on their official website:

"The first beta release of OpenTTD 1.5 has all the goodies from 2014: Hierarchical vehicle groups, update-able NewGRF presets, custom vehicle list filtering, more heightlevels for maps, and a scalable user interface for your new 3K display! What, you didn't get one? Hmm, maybe Santa focussed too much on digital stuff then…"

The OpenTTD community appears to be a strong one, and should stand tall for many years to come. With the passage of time, we begin to appreciate titles that we once took for granted.
