Rumor: Hacker Group Claims To Have Leaked Xbox One SDK

December 31, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

The rationale and motivations for the leak remain unclear.

A hacker group claims to have leaked Xbox One’s software development kit.

This follows a recent DDoS attacks on the Xbox Live, hampering users from using their online services. While Microsoft was able to bring their servers back online in short order, Microsoft’s security measures were put into question, and this just compounds on that.

Hacker group H4LT appears to have shared both the Xbox One SDK itself and documentation on their Twitter account via Mega. The same account appears to have been contacting Xbox and other media outlets since it was started two days ago.

The rationale and motivations for the leak remain unclear. Based on those tweets, H4LT appears to want to open up the console to homebrew, although they may also be looking for attention. Considering the ID@Xbox program allows you to use your Xbox One for your SDK, this presumably gives hackers the same access to the console as any game developers do.

It’s not clear what action Microsoft will take from here. They could release future mandatory patches, or place some form of DRM on their SDKs, but if this is a hoax, or if the move is not enough to harm Microsoft at all, they could just as well do nothing.

We won’t leak to any of these tweets or links directly here, but you can read it all at H4LT’s Twitter account.
