Final Fantasy 15 Combat Mechanics Explained

December 31, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

The mechanics are designed to be easy to understand, but with some challenge for advanced players.

Hajime Tabata recently revealed some new details on Final Fantasy 15’s combat mechanics.

First off, if you were wondering about the giant Noctis was facing, it’s actually the Eidolon Titan. Noctis will be able to summon the Titans, but has to face them first.

The game’s combat should be accessible, but has some layers for demanding players. You can hold one button to make preset combos come out, but they’re adjusting the game in such a way that you will want to time when to press the button to release attacks. There is also a parry system which requires you match the moment your enemy strikes.

Tabata didn’t elaborate on magic for now, but he did reveal it doesn’t expend MP. Instead, MP is used when you take special options, such as sword-warp, or dodging.

You will be able to choose one main weapon, and assign a set of weapons for quick use, but you won’t have access to all your weapons all the time. Weapons are context sensitive, appearing based on what attack you use, as well as what combo you use. The main weapon you choose determines what weapon skill you use.

Weapons do not have categories, and are completely unique, with each one having completely different characteristics. The Final Fantasy team anticipates that fans will want to collect these weapons because of this, and that has been integrated into the game. You will be able to seek out weapons by blunt dungeon crawling, or finding news in towns.

Final Fantasy 15 will be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
