Xbox One Is the Top Console in November 2014, Breaking PS4’s Streak

December 11, 2014 by Tony Ponce

Meanwhile, Smash and Pokemon are powerful drivers for Nintendo.

The numbers are in, and Xbox One has finally become the best-selling console in a given month, breaking PS4's 10-month streak. The NPD Group shared its data for November 2014, during which the holiday shopping season began and Microsoft's aggressive bundling strategy led to a massive spike in sales.

Unfortunately, game spending is a little low this year compared to last November. Overall retail sales are down 11%, which can be attributed to price slashing on hardware. Those cuts didn't have the intended effect of spurring more hardware and software sales — then again, last November did see the launch of PS4 and Xbox One, and it's kind of tough to outsell a launch month.

Even though Wii U was last on gamers' shopping lists, Smash and Pokemon most definitely weren't. Unlike its competitors, Nintendo happily shared software sales figures: Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire sold 1.5 million, while Super Smash Bros. for Wii U sold 710,000, both across retail and digital. Smash 3DS continued its domination, bringing its combined digital and physical US total to 1.5 million.

Below is the top 10 for the month. You'll notice that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare may have been the software leader, yet it was the version on Xbox 360, not Xbox One, that sold the most. Imagine that!

1. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (360, XBO, PS4, PS3, PC)
2. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
3. Super Smash Bros. (NWU, 3DS)
4. Madden NFL 15 (360, XBO, PS4, PS3)
5. Pokemon Alpha Sapphire (3DS)
6. Far Cry 4 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3, PC)
7. Pokemon Omega Ruby (3DS)
8. NBA 2K15 (PS4, 360, XBO, PS3, PC)
9. Assassin's Creed: Unity (PS4, XBO, PC)
10. Halo: The Master Chief Collection (XBO)
