Sony Santa Monica creative director Cory Barlog has already confirmed that a new God of War is in development.
Furthermore, the game is not a prequel, like the last game, God of War: Ascension, was. At this point, Cory was reticent to share more details, including not confirming or denying if Kratos would be returning as a playable character.
Cory indicated that they hope to share more details within the next two years, so it seems likely that work is still at the very early stages. It probably would have been too much to expect a new game quickly after Ascension, which just came out last March 12, 2013.
The God Of War series is comprised of three main games, one prequel, Ascension, and two games on PSP. Save for Ascension, the franchise has sold more than 21 copies as of June 2012.
While the series creator, David Jaffe, is now busy at work on a new IP, Drawn to Death, Santa Monica could reexplore one of his early concepts for God Of War. He explained that he wanted to end the series in a point where Kratos kills all of the Greek gods, and mankind stops believing them, causing them to cease existence. Jaffe also hinted at the appearance of other mythological pantheons, which could be another avenue they could explore.
