Grand Theft Auto 5 to Use Denuvo DRM Services

November 7, 2014 by Jacob Saylor

Sorry, pirates.

Digital Rights Management, or DRM for short, is a very tricky and controversial subject in video games today. While it stops a lot of rampant piracy, it also makes it harder for gamers to share titles with one another. This also makes used game sales a little less enticing, as games will come packed with a code of some sort that will unlock huge portions of the game. This portion of the game is generally the multiplayer side of things, but we wouldn't put it past publishers to lock us out of certain parts of the single player campaigns, either.

Well, sorry pirates – it looks like Grand Theft Auto 5 will be utilizing some of the most up to date DRM yet. A user on the Grand Theft Auto forums posted what many thought was just a hoax. As it turns out, it appears he's telling the truth. Check out what he said below:

"Rockstar will use new DRM system in GTA 5 for PC. This system is Denuvo, which also used in FIFA 15 and Lords of the Fallen.
This System uses special code which changes every time, so this DRM is still not hacked, and I think it won’t be.
No more piracy on PC and only way you can play GTA 5 is Steam.

Got this info today. Also today Denuvo updated partners on their site. Rockstar now here too. So it’s confirmed."

Here's the proof:

While we don't think that this DRM service will hurt the overarching experience of Grand Theft Auto 5, it's sad that Rockstar Games had to resort this sort of measure.
