Rockstar Warns Players about GTA 5 Beta Scams

October 20, 2014 by Jacob Saylor

Rockstar Games tries to keep players safe.

Grand Theft Auto V came out last year to only the most positive of reviews. Scoring top marks from nearly every media outlet and capturing multiple Game of the Year awards, the only other real contender seemed to be Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. This may be why they are really the only two titles besides Sleeping Dogs that are seeing eighth generation remakes. We are very excited to see where the new versions of GTA 5 take us, as The Last of Us absolutely astounding in its updated form.

Unlike The Last of Us, Rockstar Games has had to issue a warning to players regarding prerelease Beta testing for the improved versions of GTA 5. Apparently, there have been a number of instances where gamers might have lost or been close to losing their information to someone other than Rockstar themselves. While we can expect Rockstar to keep our information safe, it’s still wise to be aware of these sorts of things. They’ve even put up a special webpage to notify players who might have questions regarding the faux advertising they may have seen around the web.

In bright, white, bold letters, the page reads:

Please Note: There is no pre-release ‘beta’ test for Grand Theft Auto V.

If you see ads or solicitations to join a beta program, beware as this is likely some type of online phishing scam.

For all the official details on Grand Theft Auto V, stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire.

This is just another cautionary tale of being careful what you put on the web. Once you put something out there, it’s likely there forever.
