GameCube Controller Wii U Adapter Only Works With Smash Bros.

October 8, 2014 by Tony Ponce

Let’s hope that Nintendo adds compatibility with other games at a later date.

There was a round of premature excitement yesterday among visitors to the Nintendo UK online store. Apparently, the listing for the GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U had erroneously mentioned that players would be able to use the peripheral to play any software that was compatible with Wii Classic Controller, Wii Classic Controller Pro, or Wii U Pro Controller simply by plugging in a GameCube controller. It would have been amazing if true, but it's sadly not the case.

Nintendo fixed the listing and publicly confirmed that the only game that will work with the adapter is Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. As you may remember, the adapter will be available as part of a bundle that includes Smash and an extra GameCube controller for $99.99 or by itself for $19.99. Smash fans were more than pleased to learn that their trusty GC pads would be useful once again, but their revival is unfortunately limited to just the one game.

Now, Nintendo hasn't said anything about adding GameCube controller functionality to games in the future or going back to patch it into previously released games. Hopefully it's being considered as we speak. If nothing else, the adapter's existence should spur the company towards finally adding GC games to the Virtual Console.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will arrive on November 21.
