Tropico 5 Hits SteamOS and Mac, PS4 Version Delayed to 2015

September 19, 2014 by Stephen Daly

When you’re a dictator, you can afford to be late.

Update: Kalypso has reached out to us with details on why the PS4 version has been delayed, commenting that they "want to give PlayStation owners the best possible Tropico experience."

As compensation for the extra polish time needed on the console versions, the PS4 and Xbox 360 editions will include the first micro DLC, titled The Big Cheese, for free.

Original Story: Tropico 5 has just been released for Mac and SteamOS but publisher Kalypso Media has announced that the PS4 version has been delayed until 2015.

News of the PS4 version being pushed back comes two weeks after confirmation that the Xbox 360 edition of the strategy-sim had been moved to November, it was originally expected in the summer.

Kalypso gave no reason for the delay of the PS4 version. The game has been available on PC since May and commenting on the Mac and SteamOS release, the company says:

"This just in from the Tropican Department of Information: Tropico 5 is now available for Mac & SteamOS via Steam and the Mac App Store! Starting today, Mac & SteamOS users can now visit the island paradise of Tropico in the award-winning dictator sim. Tropico 5.

"Embrace your inner dictator and begin your dynastic rule as El Presidente, carefully plotting, coercing and glad-handing your way to complete control of the Tropican isle, all while laying the framework of continued rule through the Eras with the all-new Dynasty System."

While the PS4 delay is unfortunate, at least it's coming out eventually which is more than can be said for any version of the game in Thailand, where the country's ruling military junta has banned the game citing a desire to perserve "peace and order".

Kalypso recently released the Tropico Dictator Pack, a collection of the first four games in the franchise for PC.
