Wasteland 2, Kickstarter Funded Sequel To Fallout Predecessor, Available Today

September 19, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

It took inXile two and a half years to finish the game, but early reviews imply the wait was worth it.

Wasteland 2, which was successfully funded via Kickstarter last 2012 and developed by inXile Entertainment, is finally releasing today.

The original Wasteland was a post apocalyptic science fiction RPG developed by Interplay. It featured a persistent world, unforgiving difficulty, and mechanics reminiscent of tabletop RPGs. It is one of the most awarded games of all time, but is best known for being the spiritual predecessor to Fallout.

Years after Interplay fell out of the industry, inXile acquired the rights to Wasteland from Konami. inXile was itself formed by Interplay’s original founder, Brian Fargo, and with this move Brian shared his intent to bring back the franchise.

Brian launched a Kickstarter to get funds to make Wasteland 2 the game he envisioned it to be, and he was able to raise over $ 2,900,000, more than three times the original $ 900,000 goal. Unfortunately, they had to extend development beyond the planned October 2013 release date. Overall, it took two and a half years to finish the game, but based on early reviews it seems that the extra development time was worth it.

Wasteland 2 is now available on Steam and GOGcom, in both Classic and Deluxe Editions. The Deluxe edition includes a host of extra deliverables, novels, a soundtrack, and more, to come in the near future. The Deluxe edition also includes a code for The Bard’s Tale, while all versions come with the original Wasteland.
