Bungie’s President Harold Ryan and Ringmaster Zach Russell talked on record about the infamous Centipede error that impeded college gamers from playing Destiny. Bungie just happened to release the patch to fix it today
Since last week, some of these players have been encountering issues with logging in in the game, and a message that their error received the codename Centipede. Here’s the error message in full:
Error Code: CENTIPEDE Please retry that activity again and resume what you were doing before the error occurred. If you encounter this error again, please follow the suggestions outlined at bungie.net/networking, then relaunch Destiny.
Zach verified that they first recognized this as a problem on September 9, two days after launch. They did the work of verifying information with players, and slowly verified that this was an issue in college campuses. Ultimately, it was determined that campus IT departments were using network monitoring devices that misinterpreted Destiny’s servers as bit torrent servers.
While this was a concern that inconvenienced many players, Harold cited this as an opportunity for Bungie to learn to identify and react to issues and make improvements on an online connected game.
If you are still having problems logging on to Destiny, whether you are playing from a college campus or not, Bungie recommends you post about it on their forum, via their post here.
