Super Smash Bros. 4: Compatible with New 3DS, Not Combatible with Circle Pad Pro

September 9, 2014 by Tony Ponce

Nintendo is not going easy on people who bought the second-stick peripheral.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS arrives in Japan this Saturday, but it does so without any way to plug in a GameCube controller and play it like the home console versions. New 3DS to the rescue! Nintendo's handheld revision sports a second analog nub and two additional shoulder buttons, bringing the layout closer to home console controls than ever before. And when it drops in Japan on October 11, players will be able to use those additional features to perform C-stick smashes like in the good ol' days!

But what about the Circle Pad Pro, the attachment that provides those same button and stick enhancements to original 3DS models? Will that work with Smash? Sadly, no. This page on the Japanese Nintendo site lists all the games compatible with the Circle Pad Pro, including Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Resident Evil: Revelations, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Dragon Quest X, and others. Then there's an annotation at the very bottom making it clear that Smash won't be supported.

Incidentally, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (or at least its Japanese release) will still allow Slide Pad compatibilty in addition to New 3DS compatibility. This sounds more like a case of Nintendo trying to force users to upgrade rather than give them proper options. That's bad news for Circle Pad Pro owners, who seem to have been officially abandoned by Nintendo.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will arrive in the US on October 3.
