The servers for Bungie’s first person shooter Destiny are live. The game officially went up on sale at 12:01 am on Tuesday in New Zealand, and players living down under have already begun to experience the game ahead of their North American counterparts. The game is still available for pre-order in both digital and retail elsewhere in the world where it has yet to be released.
With the launch of the game’s servers, Activision has announced in a press release that Destiny had become the most pre-ordered game IP in history, beating the likes of Watch Dogs, which Ubisoft declared to be the most pre-ordered game IP in history way back in May.
The Destiny beta in July saw more than 4.6 million players registered to play the game during a week of early access play that saw parts of the game’s Earth region available to players, in addition to competitive multiplayer maps.
"Destiny is the game we've always wanted to make," Bungie president Harold Ryan said in the release.
"We've dreamt of this universe for years, so we couldn't be more thrilled to swing open the doors and let fans shape this experience as they tell their unique stories in the game.
"For us, the next generation of games is all about allowing players to collide and interact with each other as they take on epic, action-packed adventures all their own.”
Bungie has plans to release at least two paid expansion packs to Destiny, the first of which will be out in December.
