The Witcher 3 May Not Run at 1080p on Xbox One or PlayStation 4

August 22, 2014 by Ian Miles Cheong

Players expecting the game to run at 1080p on either console may be disappointed.

It was never a given that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would run at a resolution of 1080p, even though that is almost certainly the target. A recent report claimed that the game might not run at the HD resolution on either the Xbox One or even the PlayStation 4, prompting its developers at CD Projekt RED to respond that a final resolution has yet to be confirmed.

The game’s marketing manager Tomasz Tinc took to GameSpot to explain that the studio is constantly optimizing the game.

“We are working hard on optimizing the game and nothing is set in stone,” said Tinc. “Our engine team remains optimistic and we will surely squeeze the most we can out of each console. I know you might be expecting concrete info like the final frame rate and resolution, but it’s simply impossible to give you that sort of thing before the optimization process is complete.”

In an interview with World’s Factory, the studio claimed to be aiming for the highest possible resolution in both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles, but acknowledged that the game would not reach full HD.

"I don't know if it's going to make it. To be honest, I really don't know. Probably not," said Visual Effects Artist Jose Teirexia, who assured console players that the game would, at the very least, run at 30 frames per second.

Resolution for new-gen consoles has remained a hot topic for gamers and game developers alike. Most recently, Blizzard revealed that Microsoft found Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls’ 900p resolution on the Xbox One to be “unacceptable,” to the point where they aided the developers in optimizing the game so it would run at 1080p.

The Witcher 3 is slated for release on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on February 24, 2015.
