Sony has No Idea if Rise of the Tomb Raider Will Come to PS4

August 19, 2014 by Stephen Daly

It’s not too sure about why so many people are buying the console either.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has told Eurogamer the platform holder has no idea if Rise of the Tomb Raider will be released on PlayStation consoles.

Asked about Microsoft's timed exclusivity deal with Square Enix, Yoshida replied, "How could we know? They might have [spoken] to our third-party relations team, but I didn't know."

As for whether the game could make its way to PlayStation 3 and 4 at some point, he said, "That question has to be asked to Square Enix and Microsoft. I hope the game will come out eventually on PS4. But how can I tell? If you're a marketing person at Square Enix and projecting your sales for the game, if it doesn't come out on PS4, it must be lots of units that have to be covered by some [other] means."

Last week at Sony's gamescom press conference, the company announced that the console had breached the 10 million sale mark far earlier than they expected. In fact, Yoshida says Sony is a little puzzled as to why so many people have rushed out to buy one so quickly.

"It's just beyond our imagination. We are so happy. But I for one am a bit nervous because we do not completely understand what's happening. You need to understand why your products are selling well so you can plan for the future, right? It defied the conventional thinking."

He adds that many people who have purchased a PS4 either owned a rival console last time round or didn't own any last-gen console at all.

"I'm asking marketing people to tell us why. They've been to people who already purchased, and some of the early data was amazing in terms of the number of people who didn't used to own PS3 have already purchased PS4. So we are getting lots of new customers coming into PlayStation. And some people never purchased any last-gen hardware: PS3, or Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii. So where did they come from?"

Whether Sony can maintain this momentum remains to be seen but for now it seems they've returned to a market leader position they haven't enjoyed since the PS2 days.

The majority of sales for Tomb Raider Definitive Edition have been on PS4 and Amazon listings suggest the sequel will eventually make its way to the platform but right now that's also an unknown. Yesterday, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said Rise of the Tomb Raider is Microsoft's answer to Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, both of which are set for release in late 2015.
