Firaxis Will Keep Making Civilization for PC

July 15, 2011 by Ian Miles Cheong

Firaxis wants to make more titles for the PC so long as there is an audience for it their games.

Sid Meier says that Firaxis has every intention of making more Civilization titles for the PC.

"Civilization ha its roots in PC gaming and we intend to continue to deliver games for that platform as long as fans keep asking for them," he said. "There are now Civilization games on PC, consoles, mobile devices and Facebook, so we're not limited our options on where Civ can be enjoyed."

Speaking to IGN, Sid Meier says he believes "all kinds of games and gamers can happily co-exist" and that the studio is capable of developing more titles beyond Civilization World, which is currently in development for Facebook.

"We have the bandwidth and versatility to do several projects n multiple platforms very well due to the quality and talent of the folks at Firaxis," he said. "We will continue to focus on developing great games for the consoles and PC."

Meier says that Civilization World provided the studio good insights into the psychology of gamers, who had shown strong cooperative behavior—possibly due to the social nature of Facebook.

"One thing we found was that once you could show a player the fun they could have collaborating with their friends as part of a nation, they quickly became deeply involved in the game.

"We're able to do things we've never done before and really focus on the social aspect of gameplay.

"Throughout the closed beta we've found that players have the most fun working with each other to defeat the other Civs, and see the benefits of sharing resources and strategies to help their Civ become stronger."

Quite unlike most multiplayer games of Civilization where players often stab each other in the back at the earliest possible opportunity, games of Civilization World have been more focused on cooperation and diplomacy than anything else.

With any luck, Firaxis will soon announce a new game beyond Civilization 5 and Civilization World. We'll be counting down the days until that happens.
