PS4 Vs Xbox One Revisited: July 2014 Update

August 16, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Jake Baldino gives us a status report on where the two consoles – and the industry – stands as of right now.

Today our Jake Baldino looks at what fans like to call the console wars, with a focus on just the numbers and the facts.

Based on NPD’s July report, the PlayStation 4 is the number one selling console in America, with The Last Of Us Remastered for the PlayStation 4 as the top selling title. This is also the seventh month in a row that the PlayStation 4 has been the bestselling console under NPD. It should be noted that NPD does not give the actual numbers out, and they only cover physical retail sales.

Last E3 Microsoft did have a solid showing of Xbox titles, but only had Rise of the Tomb Raider to reveal at Gamescom. In contrast, Sony showed us more of their AAA exclusives, including The Order: 1886, LittleBigPlanet 3, and Bloodborne, and they will also have games like Deep Down and indies. Microsoft does deserve credit for trying to bump up their indies presence as well.

Sony seems to have the edge in the near future, as Shuhei Yoshida revealed that they still have even more games to show off at Tokyo Game Show, simply because they did not have enough time to reveal them at Gamescom. TGS is usually Sony’s big show, so this is definitely something to look forward

There is one piece of news that can be said is a healthy sign for the industry as a whole. Video game sales are up 16 percent year on year. Take note; last year, video games made $ 15 billion, so the industry is positioned to eclipse that.

What do you think about the current state of the industry? Do you agree with Jake that the PlayStation 4 currently has a slight edge on the Xbox One? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
