Xbox One: DirectX 12 Boosts FPS by as Much as 50%

August 13, 2014 by Stephen Daly

And it also cuts power consumption in half.

Resolutiongate has been on-going since before this console generation even began with games generally outputting at a higher fps on PlayStation 4 than Xbox One but is Microsoft about to close the gap?

DeveloperTech reports that Microsoft has claimed DirectX 12 can boost fps by 50 per cent while also cutting power consumption requirements in half.

To demonstrate this, Intel has shown off the performance and power benefits of DirectX 12 on a Surface Pro 3 tablet (which uses the company's HD4400 graphics chip). They compared this to the same function on DirectX 11 and found that power needs were halved. While lower power consumption doesn't lead directly to increated performance, it does allow a system's GPU to operate hotter and faster.

"In some cases, DirectX 12 can take a game that’s otherwise unplayable on DirectX 11 without even increasing the power your device consumes!" Microsoft says.

This was demonstrated by unlocking the framerate of their demo which resulted in a 50 per cent boost in FPS output when they switched from DirectX 11 to 12, without any additional power requirements.

If developers can utilise DirectX 12 the way Microsoft can, there may be very little difference between multiplatform titles in the future.
