Nintendo Sees Increased Wii U Sales, Major Losses for First Quarter of Fiscal Year 2014

July 30, 2014 by Tony Ponce

Hit titles like Mario Kart 8 and Tomodachi Life couldn’t shake Nintendo out of its funk.

The first quarter of Nintendo's 2014 fiscal year wrapped up on June 30, thus it's time for the Kyoto giant to trot out its financial figures for the three-month period. As of late, Nintendo hasn't been in a good spot, and this time is no different. In fact, compared to last year, the House of Mario is doing worse!

First, the good news. Mario Kart 8 has hit 2.82 million units in its first month on the market, demonstrating massive selling power despite the soft Wii U sales. Speaking of which, Wii U saw a major uptick in hardware and software sales compared to this quarter last year — 510,000 consoles up from 160,000, and 4.39 million software units up from 1.03 million.

However, 3DS numbers took a hit despite the presence of critically acclaimed titles like Tomodachi Life and Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Hardware sales for the quarter are 820,000, down from 1.4 million, and software sales are 8.57 million, down from 11.01 million. Overall, the company earned 74.7 billion yen (about $731.5 million) in revenue, down 8.4% year-over-year, and posted losses of 9.9 billion yen (about $96.9 million), down from 8.6 billion yen (about $84.2 million).

The declining 3DS figures are indeed worrying — Nintendo should find a way to correct that course sooner rather than later. However, the Wii U seems to be experiencing a very slight rise, which puts it in a good position as we enter the fall and expect the release of prime titles like Hyrule Warriors and Super Smash Bros.
