Star Citizen Creator Reaffirms Pro-PC Stance: ‘It Will Never Be Dumbed Down’

July 15, 2014 by Ian Miles Cheong

Star Citizen will remain a PC game, first and foremost.

Chris Roberts, the creator of the Wing Commander series and the upcoming space simulation, Star Citizen, has written a lengthy post on the official Star Citizen forums to address the game’s potential port to console platforms like the PlayStation 4.

It was recently revealed that the developers at Cloud Imperium Games received a devkit of the PS4, sparking rumors that they would be ‘dumbing the game down’ for the PS4, as it were.

Roberts has always been a vocal proponent of the PC gaming, and his latest comments serve to reinforce his position on the matter.

“Star Citizen IS a PC game. It will NEVER be dumbed down for a lesser platform,” said Roberts (his emphasis). “We will NOT limit the input options or supported peripherals to the lowest common denominator. We will NOT pass on features and technology just because they will only run on some hardware configurations.”

Roberts went on to state how he recently upgraded his computer at the office to a pair of GeForce Titans running in SLI, driving a 4K monitor and more. He asked whether consoles would in any way be able to compare to a PC platform of that stature.

That being said, Roberts did not rule out the possibility of the game appearing on new-gen console platforms.

“As far as consoles go Star Citizen will never be on the PS3 or Xbox 360. As for the next gen consoles, PS4 and Xbox One, we have NO CURRENT PLANS, but my stance remains open and is consistent with the many interviews I’ve given,” said Roberts.

“IF the platform holders (Sony & Microsoft) allow us to update the code and data without restrictions and odious time consuming QC procedures, IF they allow our community to openly interact with each other across platforms then I would CONSIDER supporting them.”
