The Division’s Enemy Faction, Classless Progression System Detailed

July 15, 2014 by Ian Miles Cheong

Among other details, the game’s classless progression system and an enemy faction known as the Cleaners have been detailed.

It’ll be awhile before Tom Clancy’s The Division hits the store shelves, and Ubisoft isn’t content with just making us wait—they’re releasing tantalizing bits of information about the game on the game’s official blog in the meantime to keep our interests piqued.

In a newly released video on the official blog, Ubisoft game director Ryan Barnard revealed one of the factions that players will be going up against. They’re called The Cleaners, and their motivation is to purge the city of citizens infected by the virus that sowed chaos throughout New York. Their motivations might be pure, but their methods are anything but—they’ll kill anyone and everyone they believe to be carriers of the contagion. Armed with flamethrowers, The Cleaners will burn anyone they perceive to be sick, or even those who are potentially sick.

Barnard also revealed that as an action RPG, The Division will have a “classless” system. The goal of having a classless skill system is not to front-load the game with classes to players who don’t know how the game works. You won’t start the game by selecting a class, but rather grow into a character depending on your preferred play style.

Barnard also touches upon the topic of Clancy tech briefly to talk about ‘echoes’, an investigation tool that lets you figure out what went down in an area during the calamity, before your arrival.

Later in the interview, Barnard revealed that you will be able to unlock a base of operations as you decrease the contagion level and increase the security and morale of the citizens of a given area.

The Division is slated for a 2015 release on the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
