Riot Games has announced that they have decided to shutdown League Of Legends’ public chatrooms. The measure is temporary until they figured out what to do with it. The reasons are many, but it comes down to a lot of uncontrollable misbehavior.
So, with the current setup, there are four default rooms, and this can only be used by a fraction of their total players at any one time. This is a necessary limitation created by the sheer number of players, now believed to be as much as 27 million players everyday. As a result, most players bring their conversation to community created private rooms.
The deal is, the public chat rooms are broken, littered with RP sellers, scammers and spam. Private chatrooms have issues of their own, with a lot of drop-ins and toxic behavior enabled by the lack of moderation tools in these areas. Even community hubs like Summoner School and Dominate Dominion are not spared.
With this in mind, they have decided to close the public chat rooms completely. Private chat rooms remain up, issues and all, so that players still have a way to communicate with each other. Riot Games is also reaching out to fans to share their feedback, most of whom suggesting mod tools, even at a rudimentary level, would be a big help in the private rooms.
