Destiny 30FPS On PS4 And Xbox One For Parity

June 19, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

For the sake of servicing large scale online game worlds, Bungie made this major performance decision.

Bungie has explained that they have opted to give the Playstation 4 and Xbox 360 versions of Destiny 30 FPS for the sake of console parity.

Senior environment artist Jason Sussman says this decision involved a lot of technical considerations, but it mainly went down to performance. Because the game is cross platform, Bungie was careful about making sure the game looks as good as possible on each console, but also that players received the same experience. This consideration also directed the use of specific technical details, such as geometry, post effects, and particles.

Sussman continues on to confirm that the game will be able to host a large number of characters on screen, in public spaces and public effects. In fact, they should be impressed by the sheer scale of the game worlds they are creating, including seeing many players come in and out of these worlds seamlessly.

Finally, Sussman shares just a few more tidbits on technical stuff they’ve done for Destiny, including cloth sim, creating a new engine from scratch, animation, etc.

It’s not quite clear how fans will take to this news, but I say, wait for the final product before you entertain any thoughts of dismissing the game completely.
