Oculus VR Founder Comes Down Hard on 30FPS Games

June 16, 2014 by Ian Miles Cheong

30FPS is a bad decision, says Palmer Luckey.

The co-founder of Oculus VR and guy in charge of making the VR device, Palmer Luckey, has come down hard on games that run at 30 frames-per-second.

“For virtual reality you need much higher framerate than you need on a typical screen,” said Luckey in an interview with LinusTechTips. “60 fps definitely is enough, you see huge improvements up to 90Hz or 120Hz, and even beyond that you can see small improvements. VR is gonna need much higher frame-rate than consoles.”

“Although even for consoles or traditional PC games I don’t think 30FPS is smart. It’s not a good artistic decision—it’s a failure,” continued Luckey.

Luckey also shared his thoughts on body tracking, motion tracking and haptic feedback in the interview. He said that the “best solutions are not yet announced.” He ended the interview with thoughts on the mobile devices and how experiences like Alien: Isolation could only happen on gaming platforms.
